Dam project still being studied

The Army Corps of Engineers hopes to decide this spring on the best way to upgrade the Drayton Dam. Corps biologist and project manager Elliot Stefanik said an actual project still is a couple of years away.

DRAYTON, N.D. (AP) — The Army Corps of Engineers hopes to decide this spring on the best way to upgrade the Drayton Dam.

Corps biologist and project manager Elliot Stefanik said an actual project still is a couple of years away.

The dam was built in 1964 to supply water to the city and the nearby American Crystal Sugar plant. It is in need of repair, and also considered a safety hazard and a barrier to fish passage on the Red River.

Stefanik said he is compiling cost estimates on four alternatives for dam changes. Once an option is picked it will have to undergo an environmental study and public review.

Stefanik said any option will cost “a few million” dollars. The federal government will pay 65 percent.
