ELLSWORTH AIR FORCE BASE, S.D. (AP) — The military has set a court-martial date for an Ellsworth Air Force Base airman charged with attempted murder.

Twenty-two-year-old Vinny Santana will be tried April 20 at the base. Santana is accused of shooting 21-year-old airman David Piland three times following an altercation at an apartment complex in Rapid City in September.

Santana's attorney has argued the airman acted in self-defense.

The state earlier dropped attempted murder charges against Santana and turned the case over to the military.
