Class B basketball: Lions, Pirates one more time

Kidder County and Linton will meet for a third time this season with a trip to state on the line. Kidder County held off a game effort from Napoleon in the second semifinal game at the Region 3 Tournament in Hazelton Tuesday night, while the Lions rolled past the host Tigers in the opener. The title tilt is set for Thursday night.

Kidder County and Linton will meet for a third time this season with a trip to state on the line.

Kidder County held off a game effort from Napoleon in the second semifinal game at the Region 3 Tournament in Hazelton Tuesday night, while the Lions rolled past the host Tigers in the opener.

The title tilt is set for Thursday night.

Down 10-9 after one quarter, Eli Benz and the Pirates outscored the Imperials 13-5 in the second quarter to get out front.

Napoleon cut the lead to 34-31 after three quarters, but the Pirates, ranked third in the final Class B poll, held on to advance.

Benz poured in a game-high 30 points for Kidder County. The ace senior also had a game-best nine rebounds for the 22-1 Pirates.

Kelsey Dockter added nine for Kidder County.

Sheridon Dewald led the Imperials with 19 points. Rikki Schmidt added 11 and Kendra Weigel 10.

Linton jumped out early and never looked back in its semifinal win over Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock.

The Lions opened with 31 points in the first half to take a 20-point lead into the break and eventually defeat the Tigers 52-30.

Alexis Jasper paced the Linton offense with 16 points. Nicole Hulm had 13 for the Lions, including three three-pointers.

HMB only had four players in the scorer’s column and only one eclipse the double-digit mark. Kaylin Sheets led with 14 points.

Central Cass and Hankinson each posted commanding semifinal victories to set up a Thursday night showdown for the Region 1 title in Wahpeton.

Central Cass put it on North Sargent early, leading 20-4 and never looked back in a 65-46 win.

Courtney Dixon led three players in double figures for the Squirrels with 16 points.

Jennica Bohnenkamp’s 16 led the Bobcats.

Casey Geffre scored 18, Chloe Wahl 17 and Lindsey Stein 14 as Hankinson sailed past Milnor 62-47.

Paige Tompkins carried the Bison with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Region 4

Harvey and Carrington will meet up once again, but this time it will determine who will be the Region 4 champion.

Harvey defeated Rolla-Rock Lake 55-42 and Carrington routed Langdon 58-31 to earn their spots in the Region 4 title game Thursday in Devils Lake.

Harvey’s Amy Buxa scored 10 points in third quarter to help the Hornets take a 40-35 lead after three, but it was the defense, holding Rolla-Rock Lake to just seven points in the fourth, that sealed the victory.

Buxa led the Hornets with 19 points and Rachel Nyhus had 11.

Amber Volanti and Jordan Robert topped the Bulldogs with 10 points apiece.

Carrington jumped out to a 20-3 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Kali Kurtz and Sierra Rosenau each scored six points in the first quarter and Becca Scherr chipped in five. Breana Barton paced Carrington with 12 points, all coming in the second half. Rosenau had 11 and Scherr had 10.

McKenzie Hart was the leading scorer for Langdon with 13 points.

Region 5

Standing Rock and Turtle Lake Mercer will meet up in the Region 5 championship Thursday night after both teams punched their tickets with wins in the semifinals Tuesday in Mandan.

Standing Rock held New Salem-Almont to just eight points in the first half and 25 points in the entire game as the Warriors routed the Holsteins 55-25 in the semis, while Turtle Lake-Mercer built a 14-point lead after three to eventually defeat Underwood 59-49.

Standing Rock held New Salem-Almont to just 18.4 percent shooting the entire game, while the Warriors were able to shoot 42.9 percent from the field.

Shauna Long paced the Warriors with a game-high 24 points and Ryan White Bull had 17. New Salem-Almont failed to have a scorer reach double digits as DeLayna Bueligen led the way with eight.

Kelsey Everett led the offense with 21 points, while both Jordyn Sondrol and Jenna Bayless posted double-doubles. Sondrol had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Bayless finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds.

Crystal Dammen had an outstanding day for the Comets with 21 points, including five triples.
