Blood processing plant planned in S.D.

ABERDEEN, S.D. (AP) — Plans for an Aberdeen blood processing plant are moving ahead despite delays for a beef processing plant that was initially pitched as its partner.

Earlier plans had called for the IKOR blood processing plant to buy cattle blood from Northern Beef Packers, whose plant is under construction following several delays.

The company takes blood from beef cattle younger than 30 months old, processes it so that only red blood cells remain and modifies it to make it safe to use.

IKOR’s vice president of clinical operations now says the blood processing plant has enough other sources, at least for the next few years, to go forward with its operations.

Steve Tye says eventually the IKOR plant could employ a couple hundred people in Aberdeen.
