Ostlie beats own IM record, Marler notches other region title for Blue Jays

Landon Ostlie lowered his own school record in the 200 individual medley to lead the Blue Jay swimmers and divers at the West Region meet on Saturday in Mandan. Ostlie’s time of 2:03.48 beat his previous best of 2:04.99 as the junior standout won the event and placed second in the 100 butterfly as Jamestown placed fourth of out six teams with 245 points.

“It’s about what we hoped for,” coach Marney Shirley said. “As a team we swam pretty well. Hopefully we can have a good week of practice and then finish the season strong.”

Willy Marler collected one West Region title, but was beaten in the 50 free for the first time this year by Minot’s Joe Burns, 22.21-22.69.

“The three things about the 50 are you need a good start, good turn and good finish, he didn’t have any of those, but he still swam a 22.66 — a lot of kids would love to go that fast,” Shirley said.

Marler, a sophomore, answered later and took the 100 free in a time of 49.09. He still enters the state meet with the best times in each race.

“He’s still young and when you’re on top, people want to knock you off,” Shirley said.

Chasen Miller, the Jays’ other big gun, placed second in the 500 (5:08.90) and fourth in the 200 (1:54.35), both PRs. He sliced six seconds in the 500.

“Chasen has swam really well all season. He’s turned into quite a swimmer,” Shirley said.

Miller, Ostlie and Marler, who each earned all-West Region honors, also led the 400 free relay team to a second-place finish, touching in 3:29.75. Phillip Mangin swam the lead leg.

The Jays were also third in the 200 free with Dave Reimers instead of Mangin, joining Miller, Ostlie and Marler.

Individually, Reimers came in eighth in the backstroke (1:04.29) in a PR.

Logan Rasmussen was eighth in the fly (1:03.73).

Several Jays swam season-best times, but did not qualify for the state meet.

Mitch Smyth led the way, cutting 11 seconds in the 500 (6:06.20). Braydon Love dropped four seconds in the same race.

Luke Allen (100 free), Nick Bercier (50, 100), Tanner Huebschwerlen (50, 100), Cody Kilgore (breaststroke), Andy Oslund (backstroke) and Matheus Oliveira (butterfly) also finished the season with PRs.

Brett Goehner posted a personal best on the diving board, with a score of 206.80.

“We’ve seen a lot of improvement from our team throughout the season and that’s all we can ask for,” Shirley said.

The Jays head to Grand Forks on Friday for the prelims, with the finals set for Saturday.
