A Saturday fundraiser marks the seventh time volunteers and the West Fargo VFW have come together to support service members and their families. The R.O.S.S. (Remember Our Serving Soldiers) event will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the West Fargo VFW, 308 Sheyenne St.
Activities begin at 11 a.m. with the kickoff of the silent auction as well as barbecues and chips for $3 until 1:30 p.m. Hundreds of items will be featured on the auction, which closes at 7 p.m. An afternoon games session runs from 1:30 to 4:30, with bingo from 2-3 p.m. The evening activities begin with an “Adopt-a-Unit” Ceremony during which the West Fargo VFW will formally “adopt” seven North Dakota Army National Guard units, the North Dakota Air National Guard’s 119th Wing and the Fargo-based Navy Reserve unit. The ceremony will be followed by a Memorial Program at 4:45 p.m. in honor of North Dakota service members killed in the global war on terrorism. A steak dinner, which includes sides and dessert, runs from 5 to 7 p.m.; tickets can be purchased for $10 at the door. Meat raffles also will run during dinner, from 5:30-7 p.m.
All funds raised will go to Family Readiness Groups supporting North Dakota’s Army National Guard, Air National Guard and Navy Reserve members. During the past six years, the event has raised more than $30,000.
According to Charles Weible, R.O.S.S. program chairman with West Fargo VFW Post 7564, about 250 to 300 volunteer hours are dedicated to the event each year. Planning begins as much as three months prior to the event.
