WISHEK, N.D. (AP) — Bond has been set at $75,000 for a South Dakota man accused of murdering a Minnesota man in North Dakota.
An attorney for 27-year-old Nicholas Caspers, who has been living in Bismarck, says his client acted in self-defense.
Caspers, a champion auctioneer, is accused in the Sunday morning death of 30-year-old Paul Varner, who is originally from Pierz, Minn., and was working at Wishek Livestock Sales. His father, Joe Varner, owns the business. Authorities say Caspers had worked for Joe Varner at one time.
Caspers, an auctioneer for Mobridge Livestock Market, is from Hecla, S.D. He was the 2008 South Dakota Auctioneers Association bid calling champion.
Authorities say Paul Varner was pronounced dead at the Wishek hospital after a fight with Caspers.
