Letter to the editor: No one’s a hypocrite for taking what’s offered

In reply to “Other Views,” the editorial “Stimulus hypocrisy is stunning” by The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead in the Monday edition of The Jamestown Sun:
If you didn’t read the article it is a dialogue of, apparently, why Republicans are hypocrites for taking the money and taking credit for projects paid for with stimulus dollars.
Let’s put this in the perspective of a family. First of all the family is broke, as is the government. They take a vote on whether they should borrow money and go to Disneyland. The vote is 4-1 in favor. The one who voted against it would rather not borrow the money and reserve any credit the family may have to send family members to college to better themselves. This child believes that you should not spend money that you do not have. Obviously, eventually, if you keep doing that, you either have to file for bankruptcy or live on a lot less after you pay the interest, neither is a good choice.
So The Forum is basically saying that the child who wants to be fiscally responsible should not get to go to Disneyland? Don’t the resources belong to all the family? I don’t think many people or families believe that it would be fair to leave the child behind because the child has a different point of view? Or do they? I guess some people do think it would be right.
If what The Forum editorial is saying were true, then most people in the country would be hypocrites at one time or another. Once a law or spending bill is passed by a majority then you would be a fool not take advantage or your share of whatever is available. Because you are in the minority doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay taxes or obey laws passed by the majority. So, if you pay taxes, like everyone else, you are entitled to any rewards offered to the public by either side, and you are not a hypocrite for doing so.
