N.D. corn harvest inches along

The 2009 corn harvest in North Dakota is inching along, as the third month of 2010 begins. Wet conditions prevented many farmers from completing the harvest last fall. The Agriculture Department says farmers got another 3 percent of the crop out of the fields in February, but 24 percent of last year’s corn crop remains standing.

Wet conditions prevented many farmers from completing the harvest last fall. The Agriculture Department says farmers got another 3 percent of the crop out of the fields in February, but 24 percent of last year’s corn crop remains standing.

The department said calving and lambing has begun in North Dakota, along with sheep shearing.

The average snow depth statewide is 17.1 inches, compared with 16.9 inches last year. The department said snow cover protection for both alfalfa and winter wheat is mostly adequate to excellent.
