BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Former North Dakota Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp says she won't run for the U.S. Senate.

Heitkamp disclosed her decision Wednesday on her brother Joel Heitkamp's talk show on KFGO Radio of Fargo.

North Dakota Democrats have been urging Heitkamp to challenge Republican Gov. John Hoeven.

Hoeven is the expected Republican nominee to run for the seat that's now held by Democrat Byron Dorgan. Dorgan isn't seeking re-election.

Bismarck state senator Tracy Potter is the only declared Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate race so far.

The 54-year-old Heitkamp lost the governor's race to Hoeven in 2000. She hasn't held public office since then.
