IRS: Refunds await N.D. residents
The Internal Revenue Service says refunds totaling nearly $1.9 million are awaiting nearly 2,100 North Dakotans who did not file a federal income tax return for 2006.
BISMARCK (AP) — The Internal Revenue Service says refunds totaling nearly $1.9 million are awaiting nearly 2,100 North Dakotans who did not file a federal income tax return for 2006.
To collect the money, those due refunds have until April 15 to file a 2006 return.
The IRS said half of the North Dakotans who could file and claim a refund for tax year 2006 would receive at least $589.
In cases where a return was not filed, the law gives most taxpayers a three-year window of opportunity for claiming a refund. If no return is filed in that time span, the government keeps the money.
Checks for taxpayers seeking a 2006 refund will be held if they have not filed returns for 2007 or 2008.
