Final 5 field is set, minus Minnesota

The field for the WCHA Final Five is set, and for the first time since 1998 it won’t include Minnesota. The Gophers lost to North Dakota on Sunday night in the third game of their first-round playoff series, ending their season with an 18-19-2 record. Minnesota had won its opening-round matchup 11 straight times until this year.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The field for the WCHA Final Five is set, and for the first time since 1998 it won’t include Minnesota.

The Gophers lost to North Dakota on Sunday night in the third game of their first-round playoff series, ending their season with an 18-19-2 record. Minnesota had won its opening-round matchup 11 straight times until this year.

Minnesota Duluth will play North Dakota in the play-in game at Xcel Energy Center on Thursday night. The winner will face No. 1 seed Denver on Friday night. In the other semifinal on Friday afternoon, St. Cloud State will take on Wisconsin.

The championship game is on Saturday night.

The top five seeds all advanced from the first round.

Minnesota Duluth won the tournament last year.
