Jumpers lead Jays

Field events were the main highlight for the Jamestown High School boys’ track and field team Monday — but it came as no surprise to coach Ken Gardner.

Heading into Monday’s West Region indoor meet at Minot State University, Gardner was expecting the team to rally around some of the field events, especially the high jump, and that’s exactly where JHS excelled.

Brian Sinner finished second and Brett Sinner followed in a tie for fourth as the Jays finished fifth overall with a score of 51.

“It was good to see them start off well in the high jump,” Gardner said.

Brian Sinner finished second with a jump of 6-0, two inches behind top-place finisher Alex Nelson of Minot. Brett Sinner had a jump of 5-8, matching Nate Moody of Dickinson and Devin Schirado of Bismarck.

Matt Johnson placed in both the long jump and the triple jump for JHS, finishing fifth in the triple jump (39-0) and sixth in the long jump (18-9).

“I know 39 feet is right around where he was right before our region meet last year,” said Gardner. “For him to be starting out there right now is really good for him.”

Tyler Mielke, who is coming off of a shoulder injury that kept him out of the entire wrestling season, finished sixth in the shot put after a throw of 47-3.

“Just for him to be placing right now, that’s a good step for him,” Gardner said of the senior thrower. “We predict as the season goes on he will just keep getting stronger and keep improving.”

William Swanson led the way on the track for the Jays, finishing third in the 400 and eighth in the 55.

“He’s been working hard all winter,” said Gardner. “While the other guys were slowing down, he was finishing strong and catching people at the end.”

Swanson finished with a time of 54.75 in the 400 and 7.09 in the 55, just two-tenths of a second behind seventh-place finisher Duane Liggins of Bismarck.

Spencer Komoni was the highlight for the Jays in the distance events, finishing fourth in the 3,200 with a time of 10:34.75.

The 1,600 and the 4 x 1 ½ lap relay teams both finished fifth for the Jays and the 3,200 team finished sixth.

Jamestown will be back in action Friday at the State Indoor meet in Fargo.

“It seems pretty early for some of them, but it’s good to get going,” Gardner said. “It’s good to get out there and get on a facility where they can actually compete. … Just being able to get on a facility where we can get that full competition feel really helps out.”
