Zvirovski offers lecture on gardening
With spring making an appearance in James-town, gardeners are getting antsy to get their hands in dirt. John Zvirovski, The Jamestown Sun garden editor and a landscape artist, is ready to help jumpstart the season with ideas and designs. “Gardening With a Purpose” is set for 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Arts Center. “This is an educational thing to get people geared up for the season,” Zvirovski said.

The lecture, he said, “will be filled with new and exciting ideas, information and suggestions for your own garden projects.” It’s for any level of gardener and any yard or garden.
“If your yard was wrecked by diking last year, come and talk about it. We’ll see what ideas and suggestions we can make,” he said. “There will also be some information and suggestions on invigorating your garden.”
Zvirovski is asking those who attend to bring their questions and ideas to the event so the group can learn as well. And he’ll be sharing ideas on planting, colors, textures and other gardening tips. He’s also hoping the group will generate some ideas for each other. And everyone will leave feeling ready to hit the garden and the nursery.
The taste of spring has gotten to Zvirovski. He said he’s already been out working in the garden.
“I’m doing my spring cleaning,” he said.
There is no admission charge to “Gardening With a Purpose.” However, Zvirovski is hoping to raise some money in freewill donations to help a friend with a rare form of tuberculosis.
“The fundraiser is to help offset some of the medical costs,” he said.
Along with the lecture and discussion on gardening, the evening includes a drawing for a gardening gift basket worth $150, Zvirovski said. County Gardens and Floral, Don’s House of Flowers and White Drug Nursery donated $100 in gift certificates. Along with some gardening items, a free yard and garden consultation from the garden editor is also included in the package.
“There’s no charge. You just have to be present to win,” he said.
For those who cannot attend but would like to donate to the Donald Evans Fundraiser, donations can dropped off at the Arts Center. And for those who have questions, but can not attend, Zvirovski can be reached by e-mailing jzbonzai@hotmail.com.
Zvirovski said he is excited about sharing his expertise Tuesday. He hopes it’s the kick-off for a long summer of gardening.
“I want to get people pumped up,” he said. “We’ll be looking at ways to showcase your yard and garden.”
