WASHBURN, N.D. (AP) — Authorities say one railroad worker has been killed and another hurt in a train derailment south of Washburn.
Washburn Fire Chief Clayton Verke said one of the workers died at the scene. The other was taken to a Bismarck hospital. Their names have not been released.
The derailment of five Dakota, Missouri Valley & Western Railroad engines was reported just before noon Thursday. Two of the engines fell onto the banks of Turtle Creek below the tracks.
Verke said the base beneath the tracks appears to have collapsed, causing the engines to tip.
He said cranes were being brought in to lift some of the engines and clear the tracks.
