Letter to the editor: Bush was reckless with country’s finances

So many people, mostly Republicans, are complaining about the cost of the health care bill. They say its cost will raise the deficit. Forgotten is how reckless the George W. Bush administration was with the nation’s finances.

So many people, mostly Republicans, are complaining about the cost of the health care bill. They say its cost will raise the deficit. Forgotten is how reckless the George W. Bush administration was with the nation’s finances.

Bush inherited a budget surplus, which means the federal government paid its expenses and serviced the debt, paying off its interest. There was some talk of paying down on the debt. A newspaper poll back then revealed 58 percent of people preferred paying off the debt over a tax cut.

Bush ignored the majority. He traveled all over the country promoting a tax cut. He should have instead looked into how well and how fast the CIA, FBI and immigration department shared their information. The terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, took a lot of long-range planning by al-Qaida. It may have been headed off. We do not have the satisfaction of having done all that could have been done. Those tax dollars saved do not make up for that tragedy.
