MINOT, N.D. (AP) — There will be a new sheriff in town in Ward County later this year.
Longtime sheriff Vern Erck is retiring. Three men so far have filed to run for his position, with the April 9 deadline nearing. The field will be narrowed to two finalists in the June primary.
Erck has been the sheriff for two decades, serving five terms. The three current candidates to be his successor include a sheriff's captain, a Minot police captain and a deputy U.S. marshal. All have served at some point in their careers in the sheriff's office.
