Thirty-five dogs at N.D. shelter to be put down, quarantined

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Health officials have recommended 35 dogs be euthanized or quarantined after a stray dog lodged at a Grand Forks shelter tested positive for rabies.

The Circle of Friends Humane Society euthanized the infected dog and one other last week.

Health officials said Saturday that all dogs at the shelter between March 15 and 20 should be put down. Owners of dogs adopted during that time will be contacted and advised to have their animals euthanized or quarantined for six months.

State veterinarian Susan Keller says the shelter followed proper procedures in handling the infected dog, but euthanization was ordered because of the severity of rabies.

Grand Forks Public Health reports 15 people who had contact with the dog have been told to see a doctor.
