N.D. joins health care bill challenge

Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says North Dakota is joining a legal challenge to the recently approved federal health care bill.

BISMARCK (AP) — Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says North Dakota is joining a legal challenge to the recently approved federal health care bill.

A group of more than a dozen states is suing three federal agencies that will administer the law. It said individuals have to buy health coverage, and they may have to pay a fine if they don’t have it.

The North Dakota Republican said the requirement goes beyond the U.S. Constitution’s limits on the powers of the federal government.

A North Dakota Democratic spokeswoman said the lawsuit is frivolous.

Stenehjem said the lawsuit doesn’t address most of the provisions of the health care bill.
