BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Tax Department says taxable sales and purchases fell 7.9 percent during October, November and December of last year.
Taxable sales and purchases fell from $3.4 billion to $3.14 billion when the three-month period is compared to the last quarter of 2008.
Tax Commissioner Cory Fong says the growth in taxable sales and purchases set records in 2008. He says that wasn't sustainable.
Fong says 2007 is a more typical year, and he says the fourth-quarter numbers for 2009 stack up better against those of two years ago.
Of North Dakota's four largest cities, Minot had the biggest growth in taxable sales and purchases, with an increase of 6.3 percent. Grand Forks went up 1.5 percent, while Bismarck and Fargo were flat.
