Mad cow worry prompts bison recall
A North Dakota bison processor is recalling about 25,000 pounds of whole beef heads because the animals’ tonsils may not have been taken out. The U.S. Agriculture Department said tonsils must be removed from all cattle to guard against the possible spread of mad cow disease.
BISMARCK (AP) — A North Dakota bison processor is recalling about 25,000 pounds of whole beef heads because the animals’ tonsils may not have been taken out.
The U.S. Agriculture Department said tonsils must be removed from all cattle to guard against the possible spread of mad cow disease.
An agency statement says the heads were produced at the North American Bison Cooperative’s plant in New Rockford between June 25, 2009, and Feb. 19, 2010. They were shipped to distribution centers in Minnesota, Michigan and Maryland.
The problem was discovered during a federal inspection of the cooperative’s plant. The agency said the health risk to the public is low.
