The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 12 presents Audrey Lahlum speaking on “The Era of the Apron: Utilitarian Fashion from Pioneers to the Present” at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum.
The “Era of the Apron” is a program telling the story of aprons and their place in the home life of families from early pioneers to modern day homes. Lahlum uses her collection of aprons ranging from the late 1930s to modern-day creations to illustrate her program.
Learning to sew on her mother’s treadle sewing machine as a child, first sewing doll clothes and then sewing her first apron for 4-H, she has since become a collector of many “things” and it was only natural to hang onto those first aprons. She also kept several of her mother’s aprons and has been given others as gifts. In wandering through thrift stores, she has managed to collect an assortment of apron styles and has gained an appreciation of the talents and workmanship of the women who created this work garment.
Audrey Holte Lalhum was born and raised on a family farm in McHenry County, North Dakota. She attended school in Bergen, Special #55, and attended a country church, Hjerdal, near Voltaire. She is married to Howard Lahlum and the couple have three daughters and a son and seven grandchildren. They are retired and live on their farm in LaMoure County.
All lectures are at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum and held in conjunction with Valley City State University. They are free and open to the public.
