JHS speech team competes at meets
The final meet of the regular season for the Jamestown speech team proved to be the most successful of the year. The team traveled to Fargo North High School on March 27.
The final meet of the regular season for the Jamestown speech team proved to be the most successful of the year. The team traveled to Fargo North High School on March 27. The results are as follows:
In Serious Dramatic Duo, Megan Kapp and Alyssa Mangin, sophomores, placed fifth with their interpretation of “Playing for Time.” In Humorous Dramatic Duo, Jaime Kessler, a senior, and Jace Erickson, a sophomore, placed eighth with their interpretation of “Plaza Suites,” by Neil Simon.
In Radio Broadcasting, Joe Jensen, sophomore, placed eighth, and Jasmine Glasgow, seventh-grader, placed seventh. In Serious Interpretation, Anna Weisenburger, senior, placed seventh with her interpretation from “Girl, Interrupted” and eighth in Extemporaneous Programmed Reading.
In Poetry, all four entrants earned honors: Erickson was Top Novice, Morgan Baumgartner, an eighth-grader, placed eighth, Kapp placed fifth and Kessler placed third. In Dramatic Interpretation, Katie Willer, eighth-grader, earned Top Novice recognition, while Emily Engles placed fifth. Engles also placed third in EPR. Rachel Mogck, senior, also earned honors in EPR by placing seventh.
The Jamestown speech team did well at its WDA Regional meet in Bismarck on April 10, according to head coach Laura Weis. The following are the results: Anna Weisenburger, senior, place and qualified for state in Extemporaneous Programmed Reading, placing eighth, and in Serious Prose, fourth.
Mogck placed a state qualifying third in EPR. Kessler placed fourth in Poetry and will go to state in that event. Engels, senior, placed in two events — both state qualifying — sixth in EPR and fifth in Dramatic Interpretation. Katee Kunzman, sophomore, and Alec Nelson, junior, placed eighth with their Humorous Duo.
Kapp and Erickson will compete at state with a tie for eighth place in Poetry. Joe Jensen sophomore, and Glasgow both placed in Radio, sixth and fifth place, respectively, and will both compete at the state meet. Cassie Reidburn, freshman, placed in Radio with eighth and qualified in Impromptu Speaking. Brittney McIntyre, freshman, also qualified in two events at WDA — Entertain (fourth) and with her partner, Jana Lynch (freshman); they were WDA Champions in Humorous Dramatic Duo.
The State Class A Speech Meet will be held in Jamestown on April 17. Rounds will begin at 9 a.m. — all are welcome to attend.
