The deadline for submitting names for the Name That Buffalo Contest has passed, and now a panel will whittle the submissions into five finalists, said Nina Sneider, director of the Buffalo City Tourism Foundation.

The BCTF asked earlier this year for entries to name the World’s Largest Buffalo.

A total of 3,558 entries submitted from March 2 to April 15 came from 35 states and seven countries. Canada, Greece, Sweden, New Guinea, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines and the United Kingdom submitted names.

North Dakota outside of Jamestown submitted 63 percent of the votes, Jamestown chipped in 23 percent and 14 percent of entries came from out of state.

The judging panel consists of three people from the contest’s sponsors, one from the Buffalo City Tourism Foundation, two Jamestown College students, and one from an area radio station.

On May 15, ballot boxes will be placed at Jamestown Implement, Gate City Bank, the Gladstone Inn & Suites, KISS Radio and Big Dog Radio.

People can choose their favorite name by voting with a dollar, and all of the money raised will go to landscaping around the World’s Largest Buffalo.

A winner will be announced in July.
