Area Class B athletes are the headliners of this year’s Lions All-Star basketball rosters.

The annual senior all-star games, pitting the best-of-the-best in Class A vs. their Class B counterparts, are scheduled for July 20 in Bismarck and July 21 in Fargo, with the girls’ games tipping off at 6 p.m. and the boys’ games to follow at 8 p.m.

Team rosters were revealed on Tuesday, and among the senior standouts listed are 2009-10 North Dakota Mr. and Miss Basketball award winners, Adam Randall and Eli Benz of Kidder County.

Randall, having secured his place among the state’s scoring elite with 2,190 career points this past season, aided the Pirates to a 20-7 overall record and fourth-place finish at the state Class B tournament averaging 26.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game.

Benz was equally impressive, averaging 20.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 3.1 steals per contest, as the Lady Pirates finished seventh at state and ended with a record of 24-3.

Randall will be joined on the Class B boys’ all-star roster with a few familiar faces in the likes of Linton’s Trent Roemmich and LaMoure’s Aaron Stemen.

Roemmich produced 17.6 points, 8.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.9 steals and 1.3 blocks as the Lions finished at 19-3. Stemen helped lead LaMoure to a second-place finish in Region 3 (16-9), averaging 18.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.0 assist, 3.0 steals and 3.2 blocks per night.

Stemen’s efforts earned him second team all-state honors.

Randall, Roemmich and Stemen will be facing 5 athletes on the Class A side who all took home all-state honors this past season: Williston’s Tyler Eiken, Bismarck’s Jalen Finley, Mandan’s Bryan Kielpinski, Fargo North’s Nik Savageau, and Red River’s Luke Schreiner.

Jamestown’s 6-foot-4 senior forward Andrew Peterson was named as a Class A alternate. Peterson posted averages of 14.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.9 steals this season for the Blue Jays (10-11).

Coaching this year’s Class B boys’ all-star team will be Carrington’s Nate Monson and Cavalier’s Keith Hartz. Monson guided the Cardinals (25-2) to their first state championship since 1995 this past season, while Hartz’s Tornadoes (19-8) placed third at the state Class B.

The Class A boys’ all-star team will be guided by 2009-10 state champion Bismarck High (21-4) coach Steve Miller, and state runner-up Mandan (21-4) coach Jason Horner.

Area athletes joining Benz on the Class B girls’ side include Carrington’s Kali Kurtz and Region 4 Senior Athlete of The Year Laura Lies of New Rockford-Sheyenne.

Kurtz was the catalyst for a stout cast of Cardinals, averaging 10.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists as Carrington (24-3) wrapped up a third-place finish at the state tournament.

Lies exploded for the Rockets in 2009-10, posting 19.6 points and 9.0 rebounds.

The area trio will team up with Class B all-staters Hailey Longtin (North Border), Samantha Heier (Ray), Lexi Erickson (Fordville-Lankin-Park River) and Dani Sadowsky (Killdeer).

The Class B girls’ all-stars will be coached by Barb Kraft of Central Cass and Andy Braaten of Carrington. Kraft’s Squirrels (25-3) took second to Beach in the Class B state title game.

Notables on the Class A girls’ all-star roster include Fargo South’s Siri Burck and Bismarck Century’s Madi Buck.

The Class A girls’ all-stars will be directed by Bismarck Century’s Ron Metz and Fargo North’s Derek Ouren. Metz guided the Patriots (23-2) to the state Class A girls’ title this past season.
