Hiker rescued in N.D. Badlands

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) — Theodore Roosevelt National Park officials and emergency crews in western North Dakota rescued a Wyoming teenager who had suffered an ankle injury.
Chief ranger Tom Cox says about a dozen teenagers were hiking in a hilly area Sunday in the park’s north unit when the girl was hurt. He says the hikers were not on a trail, and had jumped down about 10 feet.
Five park rangers, members of the McKenzie County Fire and Rescue squad and County Ambulance Service responded to the emergency call. Cox says they used ropes and a litter, or rescue basket, to lift the girl out of the area.
The rescue operation took about two hours. Rescue workers did not release information about the girl’s condition, citing privacy laws. The girl was not identified.
