Officials are searching the James River after a shoe possibly belonging to a missing person was found there.

The Jamestown Fire Department dive squad as well as Kensal Fire Department and Foster County Sheriff's Department were called to a recovery effort seven miles north and three miles west of Kensal.

The shoe may belong to a 26-year-old man who has been missing since Sunday, according to the Foster County Sheriff’s Department.

“He just wandered away from the vehicle and we think he may be here,” said Mike Tufte, Foster County sheriff.

The call for assistance was made about 9:45 a.m. today.

Ken Wangen, training officer for the Carrington Fire Department, said others had searched for the missing man on Wednesday. He said seven representatives from the Carrington Fire Department, two from New Rockford and others from Game and Fish Department were among those who searched after the Foster County sheriff called them out at noon.

Wangen said ATVs were used to search the surrounding area and one Carrington firefighter with wet gear walked into the water to search but the search was suspended due to high winds.

More information was not immediately available.
