Number of N.D. homeless at record level

An advocate for the homeless says North Dakota’s robust economy is partly to blame for a record number of homeless people in the state.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — An advocate for the homeless says North Dakota’s robust economy is partly to blame for a record number of homeless people in the state.

A report released Tuesday showed 1,126 homeless people were counted by volunteers on Jan. 27.

Michael Carbone, executive director of the North Dakota Coalition for Homeless People, says that was up from the previous year’s count of 987, and 836 in 2008.

Carbone says hundreds of new jobs in North Dakota have driven up the cost of housing, making it tough for low-income people and families to afford even the cheapest apartments.

The report says about 40 percent of homeless people in North Dakota are employed.
