Hoeven’s Dem Senate foe says he’s avoiding issues

The Democratic candidate in North Dakota for the U.S. Senate says Republican rival John Hoeven is dodging chances to talk about issues — because he’s taking victory for granted.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Democratic candidate in North Dakota for the U.S. Senate says Republican rival John Hoeven is dodging chances to talk about issues — because he’s taking victory for granted.

The Republican governor holds a substantial lead over Democrat Tracy Potter in the race to succeed incumbent Democrat Byron Dorgan in the Senate.

Potter says Hoeven recently declined to respond to a newspaper survey about issues. Potter says he and Libertarian Senate candidate Keith Hanson gave answers, but Hoeven didn’t reply.

Potter says Hoeven’s Senate campaign style is to play “prevent defense” and avoid saying anything that might offend voters.

Potter says Hoeven is also running his Senate campaign as if he’s still running for governor. Potter says what matters are Hoeven’s stands on federal issues.
