Black Hills and Meyer spruce now landscape the lawn just east of town, and as they grow, the trees will block snow and winds as well.
About a dozen members of Boy Scout Troop 163 planted 265 spruce trees as well as aromatic sumac shrubs near Jamestown’s waste water treatment plant as part of 14-year-old Grant Curtis’ Eagle Scout project.
The plants will act as a living snow fence and will also beautify the area, Curtis said.
“When I come back, I want to see something that I did,” he said.
And he will if the trees grow as planned, said Vern Quam, city forester. Currently, the trees are 8 to 20 inches tall — a little too short to be seen from nearby Interstate 94. In 10 years, however, the trees should grow to 6-8 feet.
Quam said $2,000 in grants from the city beautification committee and a family forest grant paid for plants and materials.
