Bismarck mayoral candidate causes stir

A candidate for mayor in Bismarck has caused a stir with a comment about “cooking the books.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A candidate for mayor in Bismarck has caused a stir with a comment about “cooking the books.”

City Commissioner Steve Schwab believes the city has misled taxpayers about the amount of economic development money that might be going to a local business incubator.

He says when something is presented to the public in a deceptive manner or there isn’t full disclosure, he considers that “cooking the books.”

City Commissioner Mike Seminary says he’s offended. He says expenses and projects are independently audited.

Seminary says he’s firing back at Schwab because Seminary holds the economic development portfolio on the commission, and not to help incumbent Mayor John Warford’s re-election bid.
