Summit trail closed in badlands

The U.S. Forest Service has closed the Summit Trail in the North Dakota Badlands because of unsafe conditions that make it impassible.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service has closed the Summit Trail in the North Dakota Badlands because of unsafe conditions that make it impassible.

The forest service’s Dakota Prairie Grasslands office said a harsh winter and wet spring caused the four-mile trail to erode. It will need significant repairs.

The trail begins at the Summit Campground right off U.S. Highway 85 and connects with the last part of the Maah Daah Hey Trail near Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s north unit.

The forest service is looking for a detour route while repairs are made.
