MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A Minot man drowned in Nelson-Carlson Lake southwest of the city after his canoe tipped in high winds.

The body of 40-year-old Manning Hanson was recovered after a witness reported the accident that occurred about 15 yards from shore in wind-whipped, choppy waters late Tuesday morning.

Dive teams from Ward County and Garrison responded to the scene and recovered Hanson's body about 6 p.m.

The Ward County Sheriff's Office says there were life jackets inside the canoe but Hanson was not wearing one.
