DICKINSON — For much of the season, the woes of the Dickinson Roughriders American Legion baseball team could be traced to giving up a lot of walks and committing several errors during a typical game.
In earning a 10-9 win over the Jamestown Eagles in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Southside Municipal Ballpark, the Roughriders didn’t have the luxury of letting their past problems come into play.
The Roughriders completed the sweep with a 2-1 win in the nightcap.
Tevin Papineau hit a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the sixth inning after the Eagles scored a run in the top of the inning. Scott Gordon picked up the complete-game win.
“There wasn’t a lot of stuff you could pinpoint and say we were letting it down here,” Dickinson head coach Andy Emard said. “Once again, it’s playing with a lead.”
Dickinson committed one error, and pitchers Aaron Berg and Papineau combined to walk two batters in the opening-game victory.
“It’s not the glaring stuff,” Emard said.
Papineau’s relief effort sealed the win when it looked like Dickinson’s night would unravel.
Coming in after Berg gave up four runs to start the sixth inning, Papineau allowed a two-run single to Danny Fischer before buckling down and sending down the next three Eagles batters in order.
“I have to get them out, because if I don’t, I lost the game,” Papineau said. “I’m not going to have the loss on me.”
Berg threw two wild pitches to let the first two runs of the inning come in, and gave up an RBI single to left fielder Dakotah Walker.
The Roughriders (11-14 overall, 6-6 statewide) struck early with five runs in the first, thanks to several freebies from Jamestown starter Danny Fischer.
Fischer hit three of the first six Dickinson batters he faced.
Caleb Burgard hit a bases-loaded two-run single to score the Roughriders’ first runs.
Papineau brought in another after he was hit by a pitch, with Brodie Candrian adding an RBI single and Brandon Lange hitting into a groundout for the final run of the inning.
Three more runs for Dickinson came in the second as Jordan Tescher hit a two-run homer to left and Burgard had an RBI single.
The Roughriders went up 8-3 after the third inning with Brett Braunagel’s two-run double.
There were a couple of chances here and there for Dickinson to add to its total after its early success, but those efforts fell short.
With runners on first and third with one out, right fielder Korey Kallenbach hit into a double play to end the fourth inning.
In the sixth, the Roughriders had runners on first and second with one out, but two easy outs ended that threat.
“If we get out to a lead, we can’t sit comfortably on it,” Emard said.
Jamestown (10-16, 4-8) made a dent in Dickinson’s lead with a three-run third.
Brandon Gange hit an RBI single for the Eagles’ first run and Ian Hogan cleared the bases with a two-run homer to right.
The Roughriders play a doubleheader versus Fargo starting at 5:30 p.m. today at Southside Municipal Ballpark. The doubleheader against Devils Lake that was rescheduled from Sunday to Thursday was cancelled.
