Williston earns sweep over Jamestown

The Jamestown American Legion baseball team didn’t have much of an answer for Williston’s hurlers.
The Keybirds held Jamestown to just six hits the entire day as Williston swept the Eagles with wins of 8-3 and 8-2.
Jamestown totaled four hits in the opener and followed up with a two-hit performance in Game 2, dropping the Eagles to 10-20 overall and 4-12 statewide.

Williston swung some hot bats in the early going of Game 1, combining for six runs in the first two innings to take a 6-3 lead.
Austin Grunstad and Jeff Beckman led off the game with back-to-back singles to allow Alex Hanson to drive in the first run with a single up the right side.
Beckman was also able to score after an errant throw to third base, putting the Keybirds up 2-0.
Two batters later John Westphal drove in the third run with a groundout to first.
The Eagles rallied back in the bottom of the inning with three runs of their own, but after chasing starter Beckman from the mound, Jamestown was held scoreless the rest of the way.
Danny Fischer had two of Jamestown’s four hits, including an RBI double in the first to get the Eagles going.
Brady Anderson drove in Jamestown’s second run with a single up the left side and Tim Smith drew a walk to end Beckman’s day on the mound.
Beckman recorded just one out and faced just six batters, but reliever Connor Long kept Jamestown in check.
Jake Stilwell helped Jamestown tie the score when he reached on an error that allowed Ian Hogan to cross the plate safely.
Following the error, however, Long recorded back-to-back strikeouts to leave three runners stranded.
“I always tell the guys with two strikes you have to get up on the plate, choke up on the bat, put the ball in play and good things will happen, especially in Legion baseball,” said Jamestown coach Shane Schoeneberg. “You have to make the defense make the plays.”
Williston surged back in the second with three more runs while Long continued his dominance from the mound.
“A lot of his fastballs were away,” said Schoeneberg. “You just have to stay back, let the ball travel to you and hit the ball away.”
Jamestown’s Brandon Gange reached on an error in the second inning, but from there Long set down eight straight batters before Gange drew a walk in the fifth.
“He did do a good job of throwing strikes,” Schoeneberg said of Long. “For the most part, he kept us off balance.”
Fischer started on the hill for Jamestown and went four innings giving up seven runs on 11 hits. Gange pitched the final three innings allowing just one run, a solo home run from Derrick Linghor.
Long helped his own cause with a solo home run in the second inning, sparking a three-run inning that gave the Keybirds a 6-3 lead.

C.J. Vinger was nearly unhittable in the nightcap as he went the distance allowing just two runs on two hits.
Williston, for the second straight game, used an early lead and never looked back.
The Keybirds put up three runs in the first and three more in the second to take the early 6-0 lead. The Keybirds built their lead up to seven runs before the Eagles were able to plate their first run.
Fischer drove in both runs for Jamestown, while Jordan Lynch and Jake Stilwell compiled the team’s only hits.
Dakotah Walker started on the hill for Jamestown and struck out one over seven innings of work.
Jamestown will be back in action Thursday when the Eagles play host to Minot.
