BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Wildlife officials say ruffed grouse numbers appear to be up.
The Game and Fish Department says the spring survey indicated a 10 percent population increase statewide from 2009.
Upland game bird supervisor Stan Kohn says the state is probably approaching the high end of the cycle for bird numbers — though he says the highs are not as high as they once were, while the lows seem to get lower.
Last year, a 37 percent increase in hunters did not correlate to more birds in the bag, as the total harvest fell nearly 11 percent from 2008, to just over 1,900 grouse.
