The Jamestown Fire Department responded to a report of a cut gas line at the 200 block of Fifth Street Southeast at about 2 p.m. Thursday. Twenty-three fire fighters responded and were on standby at the scene for about a half hour.
“We’re not paged for this kind of thing often,” said Jim Reuther, fire chief. “But there is a potential for an ugly situation, which is why we find out the wind direction and approach from the upwind side.”
A stump grinder used by a tree service cut the gas line. Firefighters pressurized a hose with water and stood on standby while crews from Montana Dakota Utilities blocked the line and stopped the flowing natural gas.
“These situations vary a great deal,” Reuther said. “In some cases we’ll have to evacuate homes or businesses. In this case we just blocked off a couple blocks of a street.”
