WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — The oil-rich city of Williston saw a sharp increase in taxable sales and purchases in the first quarter of 2010, passing Minot and Grand Forks to rank third in the state.

The state tax department says Williston's total taxable sales and purchases for the first quarter grew more than 27 percent over the previous year, from $169.7 million to $215.9 million.

Williston Economic Development Director Tom Rolfstad says the numbers weren't surprising because of the booming oil activity in the area.

Fargo ranked first in the state in taxable sales and purchases with $460.3 million, followed by Bismarck with $276.9 million.
