Post 14 drops opener

The Eastern Division Tournament got off to an ugly start for Post 14 on Thursday at Jack Williams Stadium in Fargo. Devils Lake broke a 5-all tie with one run in the top of the 11th inning to beat Jamestown 6-5 and send the Eagles into a loser-out game against Grand Forks, which started at 8:15 p.m. The winner of the Jamestown/Grand Forks game qualifies for state.

The Eastern Division Tournament got off to an ugly start for Post 14 on Thursday at Jack Williams Stadium in Fargo.

Devils Lake broke a 5-all tie with one run in the top of the 11th inning to beat Jamestown 6-5 and send the Eagles into a loser-out game against Grand Forks, which started at 8:15 p.m. The winner of the Jamestown/Grand Forks game qualifies for state.

At press time, Jamestown held a 7-5 lead over Grand Forks after eight innings.

Devils Lake scored three runs off Tim Smith in the top of the first inning, but Post 14 chipped away from there.

They scored one in the second and tied it at 3-all in the bottom of the third, before taking a 5-3 lead with a two-run fourth.

Jamestown, seeded fourth out of the five teams, was held scoreless over the final seven innings.

Devils Lake scored single runs in the top of the fifth and sixth to tie it at 5-all. It stayed that way until the 11th when Devils Lake scored once off Brandon Gange when Jared Swenseth delivered the go-ahead double. Gange was saddled with the loss as they fell to 12-25 on the season.

Jamestown was 3-0 against Devils Lake in the regular season.

In other games Thursday, second-seeded Fargo Post 2 defeated Grand Forks 7-4 and No. 1 seed West Fargo pounded Devils Lake 19-3 in seven innings.
