MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Sophomore forward Josh Birkholz has decided to leave the University of Minnesota men’s hockey team.

Head coach Don Lucia announced the news on Tuesday. He declined to comment.

The school says Birkholz was facing a suspension for a violation of team rules.

The 6-foot-1, 182-pound Birkholz played in the Minnesota state tournament for Blake High School and spent one season in the USHL before joining the Gophers last year.

In 36 games, Birkholz primarily played left wing on the third and fourth lines. He had five goals and one assist and was a plus-3 for the season. Birkholz was selected by the Florida Panthers in the third round of the 2009 NHL draft.
