I see that Sen. Tracy Potter, D-Bismarck, is talking about raising taxes to save Social Security. The worst thing anyone can do in this economy is to raise any taxes. We know government can’t get our economy moving. They tried with the so-called stimulus package that only stimulated unemployment.
Potter doesn’t seem to realize that there will be no money for any government program, not just Social Security, if our economy doesn’t grow. Saddling the American people with more taxes digs the hole even deeper.
I realize that, once again, we senior citizens are being courted, because we vote. Potter is peddling a worn-out idea that has never worked and never will. You cannot tax the American people into prosperity. One thing we seniors understand is that soaking the very group of people needed to invest in our economy, with more taxes, makes no sense.
He says he will cut taxes for everyone else. One of the advantages of being a senior is that we have heard it all before. Potter’s allies in Washington have never lowered taxes on anyone, period. And they won’t this time.
We need to get this economy moving. If the Washington, D.C., crowd and Potter spent half as much time removing the roadblocks to job creation as they do trying to use class warfare to gain political advantage, we would all be better off.
Social Security is important to us seniors, but, so is the future of our children and grandchildren. A broken economy hurts everyone. It is too bad Potter does not realize that.
