The Chamber of Commerce City Beautification Committee and the Mainstreet Downtown Association have received so many compliments on the beautiful flower baskets on and around Main Street.

Although the city of Jamestown does not budget for the flowers, it does help in material ways: furnishing the equipment for watering the flowers, putting up the flowers and taking them down in the fall.

City Forester Vern Quam was instrumental in selecting the flower types and overseeing the watering and fertilizing of the flowers. We feel much of the success we had this year was due to daily watering by city part-time employees Jordan Gengler, Ross Perleberg and Caleb Sorenson.

The Mainstreet Downtown Association has an adopt-a-pole campaign to support the flower fund. This year we had 30 sponsors of light poles for the flower baskets. This year 88 flower baskets were put up along Main Street and in several parking lots on Second Avenue East (elsewhere). The flower-basket program is funded through the City Beautification Committee and with donations through the Mainstreet Downtown Association.

Next season, the remodeled parking lots will have similar light poles, and there will be need for more flowers. So more funds will be needed for the purchase of flower baskets, brackets, flowers and their care.

If you wish to be a sponsor next year, contact the Mainstreet Downtown Association at 320-3015 or e-mail main street@csicable.net. It is the community support that makes these beautiful baskets possible.
