BISMARCK (AP) — Burleigh County authorities said a jail inmate who became upset snatched another inmate’s eyeglasses and ate them.

Sheriff’s Maj. Les Witkowski says the incident happened Aug. 1 when the 42-year-old man booked on an aggravated assault charge became upset at not being able to speak to a chaplain.

He was taken to a hospital emergency room after eating both lenses and a piece of the metal frame of the glasses. He was returned to jail after doctors determined he was OK.

The glasses were worth $250, and authorities are considering a criminal mischief charge against the man.

Assistant State’s Attorney Lloyd Suhr is awaiting the report. He said, “I’ll be looking for it — no pun intended.”
