Game and Fish criticizes grasslands roads plan

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota's Game and Fish Department is criticizing a plan that likely will dramatically reduce the miles of Little Missouri National Grassland roads open to motorized travel by the public.

Among roads that likely will be closed are more than 600 miles of unauthorized roads, such as trails created by hunters that are not officially maintained.

Game and Fish spokesman Mike McKenna says that would create confusion because closed roads won't be physically removed or gated. He says the department will not support the proposals without serious modifications.

McKenna says Game and Fish has submitted a list of 38 questions on the proposal and also has requested an extension on the comment period, which ends Aug. 27.
