Rabbit show here next week: Event expected to draw from 200 to 300 rabbits and owners

In a little more than a week, literally hundreds of rabbits will descend upon Jamestown for the first rabbit judging competition held here in several years. The Sept. 18 event is set to bring in anywhere from 200 to 300 rabbits and their owners from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Montana, said Tom Norman, show superintendent and member of the Central North Dakota Rabbit Breeders club.

Karen Freeman, club vice president, said some rabbit breeder shows draw people from across the nation, like when she attended a national convention in San Diego in 2009.

“There’s rabbit shows in every state in the United States, plus Canada and all around the world,” Freeman said.

Registration for the Jamestown show is from 7 to 9 a.m. and judging starts at 9. The cost is $2.75 per rabbit.

The event will be held at the 4H exhibition building on the Stutsman County Fair Grounds.

“The people involved like the friendly competition involved in these shows,” Norman said.

There will be two open and two youth shows that are sanctioned by the American Rabbit Breeders Association.

Awards will be given for the best in class of each type of the 47 recognized breeds, with a final best in show stretching all the classes.

Norman said judges will be looking for the most perfect rabbit with the following specifications, body type, size, color, fur quality and for some breeds, markings.

“It’s a less expensive form of competing than raising dogs or horses or something like that,” Norman said.

The show is the first one sponsored by the newly formed Central North Dakota Rabbit Breeders club. Norman and Freeman are two of the representatives from the Jamestown area but the club has members in Minot, Carrington and Fargo.

Freeman said the central location of Jamestown in comparison to club members was one of the reasons the show will be held here.

She noted there are also things to do in the area for families, which is nice because rabbit breeding is a family-friendly hobby.

“We enjoy the rabbits, we love the company of the rabbit breeders and it’s good, clean fun,” Freeman said.

Norman encouraged the public to attend the free show and learn more about a hobby that stretches around the globe.

“They’ll find that rabbit people are very friendly and are interested in talking about their hobby,” he said.
