Gov. John Hoeven announced the gift from Amerada Hess on Wednesday, along with $1.35 million in donations from six other energy companies.
The $52 million expansion includes a new theater and cafe, display galleries and a glass entrance on the building’s east side. The project is counting on $12 million in outside donations, and officials say about $9 million has been raised, including $6.5 million from the energy industry.
Hess drilled North Dakota’s first oil well in Williams County in April 1951.
