Optimist Club honors athletes
Niki Schmitz, Jazmin Shafer and Cory Goehner of Jamestown High School and Sarah Becker and Lance Johansen of Jamestown College have been named Athletes of the Week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.
Niki Schmitz, Jazmin Shafer and Cory Goehner of Jamestown High School and Sarah Becker and Lance Johansen of Jamestown College have been named Athletes of the Week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.
Schmitz, a senior on the JHS volleyball team, had 16 kills, 8 digs, 7 aces and five blocks in matches against Minot and Turtle Mountain.
Shafer, a senior swimmer for the Blue Jays, swam state-qualifying and career-best times in the 200 freestyle (2:12.20) and 500 free (6:00.65) in a dual win over Fargo Shanley. She also swam legs in the Blue Jays’ 200 and 400 freestyle relays.
Becker, a freshman from Rochester, Minn., on the Jimmie volleyball team, had 17 kills and hit .576 as Jamestown College swept South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State last weekend. She also had six blocks.
Johansen, a sophomore running back for the Jimmies, had touchdown runs of 24 and 73 yards in Jamestown College’s 19-14 homecoming loss to Minot State on Saturday. In all, Johansen ran for 108 yards on 10 carries.
