Alcohol possibly involved in incident

MINOT (AP) — An American Indian man who allegedly shot a Minot hotel clerk over the weekend might have been drinking and upset about what he thought were racial remarks previously directed toward him.

Police Detective Dan Srandberg tells KCJB that 37-year-old Allen Rencountre had been staying at the Guest Lodge for some time. He said there does not appear to be any specific conflict that sparked the shooting about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Rencountre was arrested on charges including attempted murder after a police chase and standoff. The Minot Daily News said Rencountre’s last permanent address was Fort Thompson, S.D. No telephone number is listed for him.

Police have not identified the clerk. Authorities said the 66-year-old man was shot in the chest and forearm and is recovering after surgery.
