Bismarck bans texting and driving

The City Commission approved the ordinance on Tuesday. It takes effect immediately.
It prohibits operating a motor vehicle within city limits while using a wireless communication device to read, view, write or send an electronic message or information. Violators will be fined $50.
The law has some exemptions, such as for law enforcement officers performing official duties. Using GPS devices for navigation also is allowed.
Grand Forks also has a ban on texting while driving, with a lighter fine of $15.
