Bismarck bans texting and driving

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck has banned texting while driving. The City Commission approved the ordinance on Tuesday. It takes effect immediately.

The City Commission approved the ordinance on Tuesday. It takes effect immediately.

It prohibits operating a motor vehicle within city limits while using a wireless communication device to read, view, write or send an electronic message or information. Violators will be fined $50.

The law has some exemptions, such as for law enforcement officers performing official duties. Using GPS devices for navigation also is allowed.

Grand Forks also has a ban on texting while driving, with a lighter fine of $15.
