Letter to the editor: Crossing guard might help make JMS street safer
I have a daughter who goes to the Jamestown Middle School who rides bus in the morning but I pick her up often after school. I am normally at the JMS around 2:45 to 3 p.m. which gives me ample time to wait for her. The area around the school to pick up or drop off students is so congested that it is an accident waiting to happen as we saw on the morning of Oct. 25. It is unfortunate that our children are not safe around this area.By: Deb Hatlewick, The Jamestown Sun
25. It is unfortunate that our children are not safe around this area.
I have seen cars speed along this avenue not taking into account children and I have seen children dart out from between buses trying to get across the street to meet parents.
We as parents need to make sure we teach our children to look both ways before entering the street and go around the back of the last bus before crossing. Going between buses can be dangerous since you never know when they will be pulling out to leave the school. I know the children are in a hurry to get out of school and home but please stress the dangers of crossing the streets.
Drivers please be aware of the students as they leave or arrive at school. As I stated before several cars use this street at release time that do not have children in JMS and they do not observe the students. Slow down and look around.
There must be some way to make this area safer for all students. What about a crossing guard or one-way streets in front and back of JMS to accommodate cars and students to name a couple.
